As pioneers in the field , the medical faculties of RWTH Aachen University and Maastricht University have established the joint international research institute AMICARE as the ‘Aachen-Maastricht institute for CardioRenal Disease’. AMICARE is based on years of intensive cross-border cooperation and a close focus on cardiorenal diseases, incl. in the DFG SFB/TRR219 consortium, the joint EU- Marie Skłodowska Curie-ITN Consortia CaReSyAn and INTRICARE as well as the joint Euregio Interreg project EURLipids.
AMICARE is located at the ZBMT Center for Bio-Medical Engineering at the RWTH Aachen Campus and is dedicated to improving cardiorenal patient care through patient-oriented, innovative research.
On Thursday, October 20, 2022, AMICARE, was officially opened. Founders are, from the side of the RWTH Aachen University Hospital: Prof. Dr. Joachim Jankowski, Priv.-Doz. Dr. Heidi Noels and Dr. Emiel van der Vorst (Institute for Molecular Cardiovascular Research, IMCAR), Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Marx and Prof. Dr. Dirk Müller-Wieland (Cardiology). From the side of the Maastricht University, founders are Prof. Dr. Tilman Hackeng, Prof. Dr. Leon Schurgers and Prof. Dr. Erik Biessen (Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht, CARIM).
"The establishment of the AMICARE Institute, which is unique in Europe, institutionalizes the close and very successful cooperation between RWTH Aachen University and Maastricht University as of today," said Prof. Dr. Joachim Jankowski. Speakers at the opening event included international experts from the scientific community, the vice-rector and president of RWTH Aachen University, resp. Maastricht University's as well as representatives of their Faculty of Medicine. Ambassadors between Germany and Maastricht as well as Mr. Marx as representative from the European MSCA training networks highlighted the importance of German-Dutch, resp. European scientific collaboration. As guest of honor, the former Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia and Vice-President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Armin Laschet, gave a lecture on cooperation in Europe. After the ceremony, there was the opportunity to visit the first AMICARE laboratories.
