Joint International Summer School of the ESAO, EUTox working group, COAT consortium, Strategy-CKD & SFB/TRR219 IRTG with visit of the Minister of Health of Northern-Macedonië (21-23 September 2022)

From September 21-23, 2022, our SFB/TRR219 organized an international summer school together with the ESAO, EUTox working group, COAT consortium and EU-ITN Strategy-CKD, in Skopje, Northern-Macedonië. Topic was “Emerging and future technologies to remove uremic toxins: tackling cardiovascular complications in kidney failure”.

With almost 60 participants, 31 poster presentations and a very positive feedback from all participants, we can conclude that this summer school was a huge success!

In addition to scientific lectures on CKD and associated cardiovascular risk, the attending PhD students and postdocs actively joined efforts in learning sessions on „Innovation in artificial kidney“ and „Successful grant writing“.

We were very honoured to welcome as special guest Dr. Bekim Sali, the Minister of Health of Northern-Macedonië.

Also, Prof. Dr. Raymond Vanholder as initiator of the EUTox working group and president of the European Kidney Health Alliance (EKHA) was invited as keynote speaker.

In a mini-symposium, also the industry insights into kidney-heart crosstalk & emerging technologies were represented, with for example Dr. Dorothea Piecha from Fresenius Medical Care providing insights into novel technologies for treatment of renal failure.

We congratulate especially the winners of the „Oral presentation award“ (Dr. Julia Möllmann, Sofia de la Puente-Secades, Chiara Favero) and the „Poster presentation award“ (Hubert Krukowski, Laura Giordano, Maria Luisa M. Pierre)!

We thank all our PhD students and postdocs for their very active participation throughout the summerschool!
